Stanford Alumni Return to Stevenson House for Family Gardening Day as Part of Second Annual Beyond the Farm Day of Service

May 2011: On Saturday, May 14, Stanford alumni returned to Stevenson House for a family gardening day as part of the second annual Beyond the Farm Day of Service. The Stanford Alumni Association created the Beyond the Farm program to extend the university's spirit of service to communities worldwide. More than 1,600 Stanford alumni, family and friends participated in public service projects across the country – from California to New York – and in 7 locations around the world.

In one day, volunteers help begin a drought resistant garden retreat where residents, family and friends will be able to relax and enjoy the beautiful setting. Volunteers installed large rock planter beds; created hand-decorated stepping stones; planted barrels with flower gardens; weeded common outdoor areas; and shoveled and hauled more than 10 cubic yards of soil. In addition, the day gave children who participated a valuable service opportunity, and helped teach them the importance of giving back to their community.
